päd-aktiv was founded in 1983. Most of the founders were unemployed teachers who were actively involved in the working committee of Young Teachers and Pre-school Teachers (AjLE) within the Union for Education and Science (Gewerkschaft Erziehung und Wissenschaft, GEW). The founding members of päd-aktiv wanted to give teachers a political voice. Back in the 1980s, unemployment amongst teachers was high, and out-of-work teachers wanted to create meaningful job opportunities in education, primarily working with those children who were often left behind in the established educational system, such as children from low-income or from immigrant families.

Various alternative educational concepts and services were developed in the early years. päd-aktiv started teaching German to immigrants as early as 1983. Having worked in adult education for many years, the continuously growing choice of courses transformed the teachers’ centre into an intercultural hub offering a diverse range of classes.

In 1999, the organisation decided to leave adult education and devote itself to nurturing and supporting children and young people in schools and leisure time.

In 1991, the City of Heidelberg commissioned päd-aktiv with the wrap-around childcare programmes in Heidelberg primary schools, and in 1992 päd-aktiv took over the after-school club at the International Gesamtschule Heidelberg (IGH).

It was the start of a long and productive partnership between the city council, primary schools and päd-aktiv. The scope of the organisation grew to include school social work (1997) and the after-school club at Emmertsgrund primary school (1999). In 2000, the city of Heidelberg asked päd-aktiv to develop a new childcare concept for school children as part of the “primary school with fixed opening times”. Since then, the organisation has steadily expanded the available childcare opportunities for school children and developed new approaches and services (see Services). In 2013, päd-aktiv was able to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

The structure of the organisation

The organisation has a voluntary Executive Board. The most senior body is the Member’s Assembly. The management directs, coordinates and oversees the entire business, and represents the organisation in all commercial matters.

päd-aktiv is divided into departments, each with their own management. Diverse instruments for employee participation have been developed, such as the setting up of a works council.
